Love and art

The pictures in chapter 4 all present people who are in love or different aspects of love.

 

Exercise

1 Study the pictures on pages 128-129. Write the dialogue between one of the couples. What are they talking about?

2 What is going on in the painting on p. 137? How does this scene develop? Write the dialogue.

3 The painting on page 143 is an  illustration of Dorothy Parker's poem "Men". What do the poem and the painting say about the relationship between men and women?

4 Study the painting on p. 147. Do you think it is a suitable illustration of the poem "Have I Ever"? Why or why not? What were you made to think of while reading the poem?

5 Study the painting on p. 141. What do the people in the painting look like? What does "To Women as Far as I'm Concerned" say about the relationship between men and women? Do the painting and the poem reflect the same ideas? If so, how?

6 Which of the works of art presented in chapter 4 do you like best? Explain why this particular work of art appeals to you.
